Forty-nine members of the latest Leadership Oakland class (LOXXI) came together for what has become a much anticipated event. On September 12, 13 & 14th the 3-day, 2-night retreat provided participants with an overview of what is to come during the next 10 sessions; and a whole lot more. LOXXI participants gained insight into their own leadership styles, got an overview of the region and got to know their fellow classmates. They also set goals for their year in this year’s Leadership Oakland Cornerstone program.
The “whole lot more” included the “ropes course” exercises. A few people I spoke with had trepidations about participating. But as I watched, magical bonding occurred. Everyone contributed their thoughts as to how to complete the exercise, they laughed, they were serious and while moving on to the next exercise, you could see the barriers between people who previously did not know each other, melt away and friendships begin to develop.
At other times there were speakers who led team-building exercises and gave moving accounts of how to define leadership….how to recognize your leadership style and the style of others. The participants gained knowledge of Oakland County; key issues facing the region and did an exercise that showed leadership in action.
Upcoming monthly topics will include:
1. Economy and Government
2. Health and Human Services
3. Media
4. Diversity and Inclusion
5. Justice System
6. Education
7. Arts and Entertainment
8. Shaping the future
9. The class’ closing project (an opportunity for the class to show their leadership and give something back to the community.)
10. Graduation (an opportunity to celebrate and to give their commitment to continued leadership.)
If you have heard about Leadership Oakland but never thought it was for you, think again. As these participants will tell you, this program offers far more than can be easily described. You will make friends, have new business relationships and grow your own leadership ability! Call today and tell the LO staff you want to participate in LOXXII!
