Make a Difference: LOXXXII Day of Service

Each year, Leadership Oakland, a group of corporate, civic and non-profit leaders, works to improve the community – one act of service at a time. This year, our 32nd class is working with iDentify Your Dream (IDYD), a local non-profit that provides grief support, case management, and victim advocacy to families and children that are facing or have faced trauma through violence.

Over the past decade, there have been more than 140 murders in the city of Pontiac, Michigan. This number represents 140 of our community’s mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and other loved ones that no longer have the opportunity to impact the children in their lives. IDYD impacts children through guidance, motivation, emotional support, and role modeling. Our efforts will go towards helping them ensure grieving kids discover creative ways to express their emotions, remain connected to other grieving youth, and receive quality grief support.

The following highlights some of the initiatives LOXXXII will be championing, and ways that you can help.

Deleah Sharp, Identify Your Dream Executive Director

“We have a DREAM that this world finds the cure to pathological threats against the community, families and children. We have a DREAM that young people will no longer be predisposed to trauma and stress caused by early exposure to violence.”

On July 4, 1996, Dean J. Samuel, the brother of Deleah Sharp, was violently killed at the age of 22; five months shy of becoming a father. This tragic event devastated his family! However, the birth of his son brought the family joy and fond memories of Dean Sr.

Although the child was surrounded by love, support, and guidance, the family could never fill the void of Dean Sr. The family realized they could no longer protect his son from the pain and loss. He, and sadly too many like him, needed to discover ways to handle this tragic situation in a healthy manner.

This foundation was birthed after realizing that suffering can give way to hopelessness and despair. Deleah and her team have joined together to not only encourage youth who have violently lost parents to SURVIVE, but to also empower them to THRIVE. They teach children that by discovering the gift that is deposited inside each of them, they will begin to unlock the hidden treasure that brings meaning to life through HOPE and PURPOSE beyond the pain.

Our Project – The LOXXXII Legacy

Leadership Oakland XXXII in partnership with IDYD will work on 3 key initiatives for their Day of Service Project.

Strategic Planning and Training

To help scale the organization for greater reach and impact, program members are lending their expertise and professional connections to link IDYD leadership and board members to organizational training and development opportunities.

Public Education and Awareness

LOXXXII program members are using their experience in communications and media to help IDYD with messaging and branding (print and social) to increase support and community awareness using personal stories.

Grief Relief Kits

The grief relief kit is a staple part of the mentoring and healing process. Children ages 4-18 are given a DREAM journal, treats, and information to help them heal and encourage them to have hope in the midst of trauma. LO program members are assessing the items including in the current kits and helping raise funds to stock IDYD with plenty of grief relief kits to have on hand in the future.
