Have you thought about joining a local nonprofit board but unsure what to expect? Want to give back to a nonprofit board of directors but unsure how or where to start?

Leadership Oakland has prepared three one-hour sessions with local experts to help you better understand Board Member Basics, Fundraising as a Board Member and how to Support and Strengthen The Board once you join.  As a cohort, you will have the opportunity to connect with other likeminded people who are also looking to actively engage in their community by dedicating their time, talent and treasurer as a member of a nonprofit board.  Each session will consist of a one-hour, interactive session on Zoom and we ask that when registering to plan on attending all three sessions.  At the conclusion of the three sessions, you will be better equipped to understand and execute in your role as a member of a nonprofit board.

Board Basics - What to Know When Joining a Board

Date: March 2, 2021 12:00 PM Eastern Time

Thomas Sommer, MPP, CFRE - Executive Director for Leadership Oakland

Are you familiar with being a fiduciary agent?  What are the “duties” of a board member?  How do I interact with staff or the Executive Director?  Do I have to be rich or an expert in the field?  What is D&O Insurance and is it important?  This session will cover the fundamentals and best practices of nonprofit board memberships and activity.

Fundraising as a Board Member

Date: March 16, 2021 12:00 PM Eastern Time

Sommer Brock, CFRE, LOXXVII - Founder and Owner of No Nonsense Fundraising, LLC

I have never been part of a board – how do I fundraise?  I am not wealthy, so how do I contribute?  What is a campaign?  How do I ask someone for money if I’ve never done this before?  What can I expect when being asking to “support” the nonprofit?  Can I contribute in ways other than financially?

How to Strengthen Your Board

Date: March 30, 2021 12:00 PM Eastern Time

David Tindall, Ph.D., LOXXVI - Director of Philanthropy at Kettering University

Now that I am on the board, how do I help strengthen it?  What if I know people that can also help?  What does it mean to recruit members to the board?  What is an advisory role vs a governance role? What does it mean to review the by-laws?
